“Rotation calculator” sounds like it should be a simple tool: type in your lineup, get back a legal rotation. In practice, that simplicity hides a harder problem, and understanding what a calculator actually has to check is the fastest way to understand the overlap rule yourself.
A rotation calculator isn’t computing anything complicated mathematically – it is checking a small set of relationships. At the moment of serve, front-row players must be in left-to-right order with each other, back-row players must be in left-to-right order with each other, and each back-row player must be behind her front-row counterpart. That’s it. A calculator worth using checks those relationships for whatever formation you build and tells you immediately if something is out of order, the same way a referee would.
A tool that only outputs the six textbook rotation positions is solving a problem you don’t actually have – real teams don’t line up in the neat 1-through-6 grid, they stack players close together before the serve to shorten the sprint to their real positions afterward. A calculator that can’t check a stacked, real-world formation against the overlap rule isn’t useful on match day, because match-day formations never look like the diagram. What you actually want is something that checks whatever formation you build, however unconventional, and tells you if it’s legal.
