The Best Volleyball Rotation Apps in 2026 (an Honest Comparison)

Let’s get the disclosure out of the way first: I built one of the apps on this list. I am not going to pretend to be a neutral reviewer, because you would not believe me anyway. What I can do is tell you honestly what each tool is good at, who it fits, and where mine is not the right choice, because after a decade of coaching and eight years of hearing from coaches every week, I have a pretty clear picture of who needs what.

How I compared them

Five things matter when you evaluate a rotation tool, roughly in this order: which systems and formations it covers (a tool that only shows base positions solves a third of the problem – serve receive and defense are where players actually get lost), whether players can learn from it themselves, whether it works courtside on the device in your pocket, what it costs, and whether it is still actively maintained. Everything below is measured against that list.

1. Volleyball Rotations (iOS and Android)

Best for: coaches who want the whole system in one place. This is my app, so weigh accordingly. Volleyball Rotations covers 4-2, 5-1, 6-2, 6-3, and 6-6 templates plus fully custom systems, with separate serve receive, attack, serve, and defense formations for every rotation. It is also a single-purpose app: download it, add your roster, pick a system, and you are looking at your rotations – the whole first-run experience is built around getting a coach court-ready in minutes rather than onboarding you into a platform. The features coaches mention most in reviews: the shared team key, which mirrors your lineup read-only to every player’s phone so they can study rotations on the bus, printable USAV and NFHS lineup sheets for the scorer’s table, and live stat-taking that advances the rotation automatically on side-outs. Free to download with a 7-day trial, then a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. It has been on the App Store since 2018 and I still ship updates myself – the last one was this week.

Where it is not the right fit: if you only need a quick one-time diagram for a parent meeting and never want to install anything, a web tool is faster. That is the next entry.

2. Rotate123 (web)

Best for: quick lineup diagrams in a browser. Rotate123 is a web-based lineup generator from the SoloStats family of coaching tools. You pick a system (5-1, 6-2, 4-2, or 6-1), enter your lineup, and it lays out the rotations with overlap checking. Because it runs in the browser, there is nothing to install and it works on a laptop or tablet, which makes it handy for planning at a desk. It pairs naturally with SoloStats if you already use that for stat tracking. Pricing comes in two flavors: standalone, Rotate123 is $30 per year, with a Pro tier at $65 per year that adds fully customizable formations, extra phases, and matchups against opponent rotations; or it comes bundled with the SoloStats stat-tracking suite – the Intermediate plan ($10.99/month or $109.99/year) includes Rotate123, and Advanced ($16.99/month or $169.99/year) includes Pro – with a 7-day free trial on the subscription plans. Worth knowing going in: Rotate123 is one piece of the larger SoloStats platform, alongside companion apps for stats, video, and reporting. If you want a full coaching suite in one place, that breadth is a genuine strength – just budget a little more setup time than a single-purpose app if rotations are the only thing on your list. The flip side of being web-based: no native mobile app, so courtside use depends on your connection and browser, and it is a lineup tool rather than a full teaching and match-day system.

3. Volleyball Lineup Tracker (iOS)

Best for: substitution management on a budget. One of the oldest tools in this space – it has been on the App Store since 2011 and is still updated, which deserves respect. It focuses on the bench-management side: rosters, scheduled substitutions, possession, score, and rotation tracking during a set, for a one-time $5.99. The interface shows its age and it is not built for teaching formations, but if your specific pain is “who subs in for whom and when,” it does that job at a fair price.

4. Volleyball Rotations Tracker (iOS)

Best for: trying a free sideline tracker. A newcomer, released in early 2026: a free, ad-free app for tracking serve receive, defensive setups, and base rotations in real time with a built-in scoreboard and drag-and-drop positioning. It is too new to have a track record (a handful of ratings so far), and free apps in this niche have a way of disappearing or sprouting ads once the developer needs to eat. But free is free, and if you want to test whether a rotation app helps your coaching at all before spending anything, this is a zero-risk way to find out. One clarification worth making: despite the similar name, this app comes from a different developer and is not affiliated with our Volleyball Rotations app (the original, on the App Store since 2018).

5. The whiteboard (and why it keeps losing)

Worth naming, because it is what most of these tools actually replace. The whiteboard is free, instant, and infinitely flexible, and I coached off one for years. Its two fatal flaws: it shows one frozen moment at a time, and it stays in the gym. The moment your players need to review rotations at home, or you need to check overlap in rotation 4 during a timeout, the whiteboard has nothing for you. If your team never struggles with either of those, honestly, keep the whiteboard and spend the money on new balls.

If you want one tool that teaches rotations to your players, travels in your pocket, prints your lineup sheets, and takes your stats – the whole match-day loop – that is exactly the gap I built Volleyball Rotations to fill, and the 7-day trial costs you nothing but an evening of setting up your roster.

Whichever tool you pick, the tool is the easy part. Choosing the right system for your roster matters more (start with 5-1 vs 6-2), and teaching it well matters most (here is the progression I use).
